STEEP Training

The success or failure of assessment and intervention activities is primarily related to one single item: doing it RIGHT. Schools that have a well-organized, trained, and supported staff typically have better outcomes with students. The new requirements for intervention based services within NCLB and IDEA create a need for professional development activities to respond to new job requirements and district re-structuring.

With requests for services, we distinguish between a presentation and training. A presentation occurs when a speaker presents content to a group in a room. This is a good format staff to learn some general information, to increase staff awareness and to support and encourage ongoing efforts. A presentation is not a good method to train specific assessment and intervention skills because professionals have difficulty transferring what they learn in the training room to what they do in the classroom. Training then occurs in the setting where new skills are to be used. Typically STEEP training occurs in a school. Assessment training involves conducting assessments with some or all students in the school under the guidance of STEEP consultants. Similarly intervention training involves assessment and intervention planning with actual students.

Therefore, initial training is typically structured around a 2-day visit. STEEP consultants provide training in workshop style sessions. More specifically, for assessment STEEP consultants lead a local school district team into a pilot school to conduct assessments with children. Participants first observe consultants conduct the assessments and then have an opportunity to conduct the assessments themselves with feedback from the consultants. Following the assessments, participants obtain experience scoring and interpreting the assessment data. Intervention training progresses in the same manner with students identified by the assessment as potentially in need of intervention. STEEP consultants guide district teams as they determine which students need help, determine what type of help is needed, and tracking student progress.

Training and Support can be Provided in a Variety of Formats
    • For more information about on-site training, click here.
  • Web-based Interactive Seminars (useful for districts who are underway with RTI and want to fine tune or troubleshoot their process).
  • Web-Based Training. The entire STEEP assessment and intervention process can be learned using web based training. This training includes a variety of learning modalities, interactive exercises, and feedback. It can be combined with an on-site facilitator who can assist with initial activities such as screening, identifying appropriate interventions, and progress monitoring. The course was developed and is supervised by Joe Witt. Click here for more information on STEEP e-learning.
